Feed the Monster

Feed the Monster is an interactive learning app that teaches children the fundamentals of reading.

The game is based on years of research and experience in the science of literacy. It incorporates key skills for literacy, including Phonological Awareness, Letter Recognition, Phonics, Vocabulary, and Sight Word Reading so kids can develop a strong foundation for reading.

Feed the Monster was funded by Norway as part of the EduApp4Syria-competition. EduApp4Syria was an international innovation competition that has sourced two open source smartphone applications with the aim of helping Syrian children learn how to read in Arabic and improve their psychosocial wellbeing.

Curious Learning then localized Feed the Monster to 50+ languages, and have pursued multiple innovative distribution channels, reaching over 1 million users in over 200 countries and territories around the world.

These learnings allowed a rapid crisis response to the Ukrainian closure of schools in 2022, where within just 100 days, Feed the Monster (Ukrainian) was downloaded by over 100,000 users.

Most importantly, the efficacy and cost-effectiveness of the overall approach has been validated by a World Bank DIME study in Northern Nigeria. Targeting some of the most vulnerable learners, results reported 0.46-0.63 standard deviations increase in literacy/numeracy for 6-9 year olds, making it one of the few educational interventions that rank highly for learning impacts, cost-effectiveness, and scalability.
